Ask anyone who had a pet when they were growing up and he or she will tell you that caring for an animal adds such a wonderful dimension to childhood. Their pets are often associated with some of their most cherished memories.
As I mentioned in yesterday’s post on including pets in your portrait session, I love photographing children and families with their pets. Recently, I was able to visit with my sweet friend/college roommate in Wisconsin. It was wonderful to meet her family and see them interact with one another. The girls enjoyed introducing me to all their pets, and they were very excited about the pet chicks that they are raising. I have to say that I never would have put “pet” and “chicken” together, but these chicks were really affectionate! They love attention, and a couple of times one of them fluttered up into my lap to say hello.

Man, I can’t imagine trying to keep a small bird like that in focus. Any special tricks you used?
Hi, Megan. Actually, the chick was extremely cooperative. You definitely want a faster shutter speed to account for movement. This was shot at 1/250. And even though my lens will go to 2.8, I selected a narrower aperture of f/5.6.
Oh so sweet, Adrienne! That is beautiful! Yes, caring for animals adds a wonderful dimension to our childhood. I still remember the neighbor’s newborn pups I got to feed with a bottle….love!

I love this! Little chicks are so adorable and this image shows how easy it is to fall in love with them, like this girl obviously has.
Oh this is sweet.
What a sweet photo. You captured the lighting, personality of the little girl, and the fuzziness of the little chick beautifully.
This is so sweet Adrienne! I love it!
Really nice! Every year the Tractor and Supply store has baby chicks and ducks for sale…now I just need a farm to put them on. How fun that you were in Wisconsin!
